Ook in het buitenland roept de opheffing van de NPS, als gevolg van het kabinetsvoorstel over de publieke omroep, veel onbegrip en ongeloof op. Dat blijkt uit de reacties van publieke omroepen in heel Europa, die met de NPS samenwerken in de European Broadcast Union (EBU). NPS has been the heart of the development of the multicultural tv-programmes in Europe. Do not stop that heart beating!”, aldus een journalist van de Finse omroep YLE.
De NPS heeft in de afgelopen jaren in Europa een voortrekkersrol gespeeld in de ontwikkeling van televisieprogramma’s over de multiculturele samenleving. Die rol blijkt onder andere uit het, sinds 1996, organiseren van de jaarlijkse PRIX EUROPA IRIS, de Europese mediaprijs voor multiculturele programma’s. De omroep neemt actief deel in de EBU Intercultural Programme Group, waarvan de NPS nu voorzitter is. Ook als initiatiefnemer van de succesvolle Europese coproductie City Folk (portretten van Europese stedelingen) wordt de NPS geprezen. De serie, waar het afgelopen jaar 14 landen aan deelnamen, gaat zijn achtste jaar in.
In de loop der jaren is een uitgebreid netwerk van contacten met omroepen in heel Europa ontstaan. Steunbetuigingen voor het behoud van de NPS komen uit Groot-Brittannië, Spanje, Zweden, Noorwegen, Finland, Denemarken, Hongarije, Kroatië, Ierland, België, Roemenië, Oostenrijk, Slovenië, Slowakije, Portugal en Frankrijk.
