‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’ is de grote winnaar geworden van de Oscars dit jaar. De film neemt maar liefst 11 Oscars mee naar Nieuw -Zeeland. De Nederlandse inzending ‘De Tweeling viel niet in de prijzen.
Het fantasiespektakel LOTR won onder meer de award voor beste film, beste regisseur Peter Jackson en best bewerkte script. ‘Return of the King’ werd in 11 categorieën genomineerd en werd even zoveel bekroond.
De prijs van beste acteur ging naar Sean Penn, voor zijn rol in ‘Mystic River’. Zoals verwacht ging de Oscar voor beste actrice naar de Zuid-Afrikaanse Charlize Theron, voor rol van een vrouwelijke seriemoordenaar in ‘Monster’.
De beste mannelijke bijrol ging naar Tim Robbins voor zijn rol in Clint Eastwood’s ‘Mystic River’. De beste vrouw in een bijrol was Renee Zellweger, voor haar rol als een lompe boerin in ‘Cold Mountain’.
De thriller ‘Mystic River’ won dus twee Oscars, het zeemannen-epos ‘Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World’, verlaat ook Hollywood met twee Oscars onder de arm. ‘Cold ‘Mountain’, ‘Lost in Translation’, ‘Monster’ en ‘Finding Nemo’ gingen allen met een van de felbegeerde beeldjes aan de haal.
De Nederlandse kanshebber ‘De Tweeling’ ging helaas met lege handen naar huis. Nederland werd in de categorie beste niet Engels gesproken film door het Canadeze ‘Les Invasions Barbares’ verslagen.
